Six Sigma: Role Allocation

The Six Sigma methodology is used for introduction and implementation of process improvement projects in an enterprise.

These Six Sigma improvement projects are led by special educated employees. Every participant assumes a specific role in this case. Six Sigma's role allocation is leant on the belt colours of (attributes of grades) Japanese martial arts.

Six Sigma Sponsor

The Six Sigma Sponsor – also called Six Sigma Champion – is the responsible person who spreads knowledge of Six Sigma in his company (organisation). He assumes the role as leader related to Six Sigma process improving projects and creates schedules and procedures how to implement the Six Sigma method in an organisation.

main tasks:

  • selection of Six Sigma improvement projects and definition of project tasks
  • nomination and support of Six Sigma Black Belts, Green Belts and Yellow Belts
  • provision of required resources for a Six Sigma project
  • controlling of Six Sigma projects
  • controlling of implementation of the Six Sigma method
  • reporting of (intermediary) results to the management

Six Sigma Yellow Belt

The Six Sigma Yellow Belt acts as a supporter to the Six Sigma organisation concerning Six Sigma process improvement projects in a company. Every employee – no matter if he or she is an administration employee or a fabrication employee – has the possibility to act as a Six Sigma Yellow Belt. Six Sigma Yellow Belts analyse measurement results with Six Sigma tools and do the preliminary work for Six Sigma Black Belts and Six Sigma Green Belts.

main tasks:

  • active support for Six Sigma Green Belts and Six Sigma Black Belts related to Six Sigma projects
  • analysis of measuring instruments and definition of alarming process elements
  • implementation of procedures, which had been defined by Six Sigma Black Belts and Green Belts
  • participation in meetings
  • forwarding of measuring results to the main responsible person

Six Sigma Green Belt

The Six Sigma Green Belt is a project director of Six Sigma process improvement projects respectively particular projects. Green Belts are able to solve a big percentage of process problems, which can appear within a production line. Six Sigma Green Belts are responsible for the positive denouement of Six Sigma projects, guided by them.

main tasks:

  • guidance of small Six Sigma (particular) projects in a company
  • guidance of teams, appropriate to a Six Sigma improvement project
  • training of employees to Six Sigma Yellow Belts
  • reporting  (of results) to Six Sigma Black Belts and Six Sigma Sponsors
  • control of Six Sigma tools and goal orientated implementation of the Six Sigma method

Six Sigma Black Belt

The Six Sigma Black Belt acts as a project director of complex Six Sigma improvement projects. The Six Sigma Black Belt is responsible for the positive denouement of Six Sigma projects, guided by them. Six Sigma Black Belts mainly work full time on Six Sigma process improvement projects.

main tasks:

  • mentor and coach for appliance of Six Sigma method and tools
  • realisation of trainings and workshops concerning new Six Sigma tools
  • education and coaching of Six Sigma Green Belts and Yellow Belts
  • control of Six Sigma tools and goal orientated implementation of the Six Sigma method
  • reporting (of results) to Six Sigma Sponsors and the company management
  • realisation of meetings
  • responsible for the success of Six Sigma improvement projects
  • search for chances to introduce Six Sigma projects in their company
